Individuals in this age group do not manifest depression, anxiety, or substance use the same as more mature, developed adults. They often feel invincible. So, they can’t recognize or accept how serious their symptoms may be. They are more impulsive and have a less developed critical reasoning part of their brain. Because of this immaturity, their evaluation and treatment must take an approach catered to their developmental life stage. This can happen with a psychiatrist trained in young adult psychiatry.

Teens and Young Adults: An Emerging Population

These “emerging adults” are those individuals usually between the ages of 17 to mid-20s. They are in a bridge life stage. It’s characterized by an active transition from dependency to mature responsibility. Individuals in this stage of life are no longer dependent on parents or teachers, and they’re supposed to fend for themselves. But, they do not yet have the same skillset and experiences as a full adult. They have to learn to take responsibility for themselves and engage in intimate relationships.

Furthermore, there’s more psychological instability and identity exploration, and exploratory behaviors. This is developmentally appropriate, but it also carries psychological risks.

Symptoms of Common Teenage and Young Adult Psychiatric Disorders

Teens and young adults are in a critical period of growth and change, making them particularly vulnerable to mental health issues. Transitioning from adolescence to adulthood brings about developmental challenges, including increased independence and the pressure of emerging responsibilities. These changes can exacerbate underlying mental health conditions or trigger new ones. Recognizing and addressing conditions like depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and ADHD issues early is crucial for promoting mental health and well-being.

Depression

Major depressive disorder manifests in a different way than in more mature adults. Mature adults say that sadness is their primary symptom. But, teens are less likely to have depressed moods. They would be more likely to present with irritability and oppositional behavior. Or, increased use of drugs and alcohol. They may also use food to cope with their emotions and experience and weight gain and appetite changes. Most striking is that these individuals rarely process that they have major depression. As a result, they are much less likely to seek help. The risk of self-harm, including suicide, is high in this age group.

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder also manifest in different ways. Younger patients have fewer complaints of physical instability racing heart, sweating, headaches, etc. . They also tend to lack awareness that they’re feeling anxious or worried. These emerging adults manifest the anxiety disorder symptoms with:

Decreased academic performance
Failure to uphold work responsibilities
Not fulfilling social and family obligations
Engaging in thrill-seeking, high-risk behaviors without regard for consequences.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder (manic depression) presents with more impairment insight compared to adults. They are more likely to attribute manic or depressive symptoms to be part of “who they are.“. They may not heed any advice from adults to get an appropriate evaluation and treatment. Young adults and teens with bipolar disorder have a very increased risk of developing co-occurring alcoholism and addiction disorders. In this younger population, up to 60% have some degree of substance abuse. Thus, it is vital that these patients with manic-depressive symptoms get evaluated ASAP. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD and ADD in this population often result in academic and work difficulties. In fact, ADHD isn’t always noticeable until they go to college or enter the workforce.
