Prescription Narcotics: A Troubling Trend Over the Last Decade

These medications are very powerful and have high addiction potential. Thus, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) designates these as controlled substances. They carry a high risk of developing a substance abuse disorder. The scary part is that it is often hard to determine ahead of time who will become addicted to any of these drugs. Most recent research suggests at least 5% to 10% of those taking these medications will become dependent. Thus, becoming unable to stop on their own.

Many of those addicted to these prescription drugs transition to more powerful drugs. It is more common than you might think for someone addicted to Adderall to transition to cocaine or methamphetamines. Quite a few people become addicted to Percocet, Vicodin, or other opioid pills. Then, they transition to getting potentially deadly heroin or fentanyl opioid addictions. Many of these people will need Suboxone to save their lives.

Do you think those Valium or Xanax prescribed by your general doc are without risk? Quite a few people in my practice started these medications as prescribed and have become addicted. So much so, they can’t function without the medication. If they try to stop, their anxiety goes through the roof.

Excessive sedation during the day,
Significant memory problems and forgetfulness,
Diminished focus and concentration.

Addiction to prescription stimulant medication for ADD and ADHD such as Adderall includes:

Severe sleep disturbances,
Decreased appetite with potentially dangerous weight loss,
Worsening depressed mood,
Increased anxiety,
Acute suicidal ideation if abruptly stopped,
Loss of effectiveness with focus and concentration.

There is also the risk of addiction to Adderall and Ritalin turning into cocaine addiction or methamphetamine addiction.
